⚾ SURGE SPORTS — NEW YORK BASEBALL WEEKEND UPDATE

SURGE Sports Daily article artwork

August 14–16, 2026

The weekend produced

two very different series for New York baseball

: the Yankees escaped Toronto with a dramatic extra-inning win after dropping the first two games, while the Mets

swept Washington at Citi Field

and continued their post-trade-deadline surge.

🔵

YANKEES: Rice Saves the Weekend in Toronto

The Yankees entered Sunday in serious danger of being swept after losing

3-1 Friday

and

4-1 Saturday

to Toronto. Friday's loss featured another strong Gerrit Cole outing that New York couldn't turn into a victory, while Charles McAdoo's go-ahead seventh-inning double helped Toronto take Saturday's game. Sunday changed the mood.

Ben Rice launched the tiebreaking home run in the 10th inning

, lifting New York to a

4-3 victory

and preventing a three-game sweep.

Yankees Weekend:

Friday:

Blue Jays 3, Yankees 1

Saturday:

Blue Jays 4, Yankees 1

Sunday:

Yankees 4, Blue Jays 3 — 10 innings

Weekend record: 1-2

The larger concern remains offense. New York scored only

six runs over the entire three-game series

, and four came Sunday.

⚡ SURGE ANALYSIS

Sunday's win was important, but it shouldn't disguise what happened Friday and Saturday. The Yankees received quality pitching and still struggled to generate offense. That becomes dangerous in October, when elite pitching makes runs even harder to manufacture. Rice's home run prevented this from becoming a disastrous weekend. Now New York needs to turn Sunday's emotional victory into something bigger. There's also a personnel storyline to watch: Cody Bellinger's return remains pending. Aaron Boone clarified Sunday that Bellinger will undergo more workouts before beginning a rehab assignment later this week; Boone said there has been

no setback

with his strained left hamstring.

🟠 METS: SWEEP AT CITI FIELD

Meanwhile, the Mets couldn't have asked for much more.

Three games. Three wins.

Friday began with a

4-1 victory

, powered by home runs from Francisco Lindor and Jared Young. Saturday produced the weekend's most dramatic moment. The Mets entered the ninth trailing Washington before Francisco Alvarez tied the game and

Lindor delivered the walk-off RBI single for a 5-4 victory.

Then Sunday completed the sweep. Christian Scott pitched into the seventh inning for the first time since returning from Tommy John surgery, while

Luis Torrens hit a two-run homer

in a

4-3 Mets victory

.

Mets Weekend

Mets 4, Nationals 1

Mets 5, Nationals 4

Mets 4, Nationals 3

Weekend record: 3-0 — SWEEP 🧹

This is becoming more than one good series. The Mets entered Saturday

8-3 since the trade deadline

and then won both remaining games of the weekend. What should encourage Mets fans most is

how

they're winning. Friday brought power.

Saturday required a ninth-inning comeback. Sunday brought strong starting pitching and enough offense to finish the sweep. That's the profile of a club beginning to find multiple ways to win. Christian Scott's performance may be especially significant. A healthy Scott capable of working deep into games could effectively become another late-season addition to the pitching staff.

🗽

SURGE SPORTS WEEKEND VERDICT

METS: A 🧹

A perfect weekend. Lindor delivered another signature moment, the offense found timely hits, Scott provided an encouraging start and New York swept Washington.

YANKEES: C

Ben Rice's Sunday homer rescued the series from becoming considerably uglier, but a 1-2 weekend featuring only six total runs raises legitimate offensive questions.

⭐ NEW YORK PLAYER OF THE WEEKEND

Francisco Lindor:

Home run Friday.

Walk-off winner Saturday.

Series sweep Sunday.

🔥 MOMENT OF THE WEEKEND

Ben Rice's 10th-inning homer Sunday.

One swing changed the Yankees' flight home from

“we just got swept”

to

“maybe this can become a momentum win.”

📈 BIGGEST WEEKEND WINNER

The Mets.

No debate.

They didn't merely win a series.

They swept it.

And the Mets are starting to make their late-summer run one of the more interesting stories in New York sports.
